Faces and Places-Children
For: Grades Pre K - 6th
Objectives:• Sort pictures of Faces and Places-Children into groups according to
their physical characteristics and/or behavior.
• Describe the reasoning for each grouping.
• List common characteristics of the different groups.
• Present groupings to classmates.
Steps:• After teaching a unit on children around the world, I divided my class
up into four groups of students. We brainstormed common
characteristics that each child shares.
• Using the Pacon® Faces and Places-Children packs, I directed each
group to sort their Faces and Places pictures into different categories.
• After ten minutes of sorting, each group presents their groups’
categorization. After each group has presented, we discussed as a
whole group the common themes that all groups came up with, and
interesting findings the individual groups had. Examples: Clothing,
cultural dress, unique characteristics, regional landscapes,
• Chart the findings of the whole group.
• Art project: Have each child pick a picture and draw what they see, draw apart of it up close, draw that item in a different location (creating a different story to go with it).
• Puzzles: Cut pictures into pieces and have the children piece them together as a small group or individually.• Post a set of pictures on a bulletin board along with a world map and run a string from the picture to the part of the world where the child(ren) lives.
• Story starters as a large group:
1. Where do the children/people live? How is their culture different than yours? What’s similar between their country/culture and ours?
2. Compare and contrast two or more of the pictures and describe what you see.
3. What are some of the structural pieces we see in these pictures? Where are they located? What materials were used to construct them? How would they be made today? Is it different than when they were originally created? What people live around these famous landmarks?
• Write a poem, play or story using one of the pictures as inspiration.
• Colors within the pictures: Discuss where color is all around our world. List what colors are seen and where they are found and how they are used.
1. Color/paint a picture similar to one shown but in different colors and share with the class how it changes our outlook of that item.
2. Discuss how it would be if you could not see color, mention some people cannot, how would that look to them and how can they differentiate the different landforms or people without seeing color?Does it matter? Are there other characteristics that can be seen to help determine what they’re seeing?
3. Paint the picture in black and white.
• Have a history lesson on when the towns/landmarks were built. Where did the people come from before they lived there? Write an essay answering one or both of the previous questions and share them in a presentation orally or through technology.
