Leonardo da Vinci
Leonardo da Vinci was a Renaissance man. He was an artist, an inventor, and a scientist. He painted masterpieces like Mona Lisa and the Last Supper. He tried to invent flying machines and diving suits. He also studied the human body and knew more about how the body works than most scientists of his time.
Henri Matisse began his painting career in bed. While in the hospital with appendicitis, his mother brought him a painting set to keep him busy. He began making copies of famous works of art, but he did not stop there. He developed his own style of painting called Fauvism and developed art forms like decoupage. With his art, Matisse showed people that art did not have to look real to be beautiful.
Rembrandt van Rijn
Rembrandt van Rijn lived during a time when artists made people look perfect in their portraits. But Rembrandt was more interested in realistic pictures than he was in perfection. He painted people exactly the way they looked, wrinkles and all. Rembrandt also experimented using light in his work to create dramatic scenes.
Claude Monet was an Impressionist best known for his paintings of water lilies. Working mostly outdoors, using bright colors, and painting in broken brush strokes, Monet perfected a technique that won him praise and admiration. He liked to paint the same scene at different times of the day.
